Healthcare ISV Boosts Performance 25% with AWS Migration

Use Case: On-premises Oracle Database Migration to Amazon EC2

Business Challenge

A leading enterprise healthcare ISV that powers the supply chain for many healthcare facilities needed to migrate mission-critical Oracle databases off aging on-premises Linux infrastructure to AWS. These databases could no longer keep pace with growing data volumes, high-demand workloads, or the real-time processing requirements their platform demanded.

Three core risks were driving urgency:

  • Scalability constraints: The on-premises environment lacked the elasticity to support the client’s expanding healthcare supplier network.
  • Compliance exposure: Enforcing HIPAA and GDPR standards on legacy infrastructure required significant manual effort and introduced audit risk.
  • Capital cost burden: Ongoing investment in physical hardware was unsustainable.

The migration had to meet strict HIPAA compliance requirements, maintain continuous availability for healthcare supply chain operations, and position the client for long-term cloud scalability. Any migration also had to ensure zero disruption to the medical supply chain — an operational requirement with direct patient care implications.

 

Datavail’s Solution

Datavail migrated the client’s Oracle databases to EBS-Optimized Amazon EC2 instances — selected over Amazon RDS to preserve full OS-level control and maintain existing Oracle configurations, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and Data Guard.

Our migration approach included:

  • Oracle RMAN enabled efficient transfer of large database volumes.
  • Oracle Data Guard maintained real-time replication between the on-premises primary and the AWS standby over a secure hybrid connection, with continuous redo transport throughout the transition.
  • Amazon VPC with AWS IAM and VPC Flow Logs enforced HIPAA-compliant network security and access controls.
  • AWS Backup enabled automated cross-region snapshots and point-in-time recovery, with Oracle RMAN providing additional protection.
  • Amazon CloudWatch and Datavail TechBoost™ handled real-time performance observability and proactive alerting post-migration.
  • TDE and centralized audit logging were implemented to simplify ongoing HIPAA and GDPR compliance enforcement in the new cloud environment.
