Percona Live 2023 was an exciting open-source database event that brought together industry experts, database administrators, data engineers, and IT leadership. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the latest advancements and trends in open-source databases and technologies such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MariaDB, and Kubernetes.
Datavail was a proud sponsor of Percona Live 2023, and I was thrilled to see that this year’s event was held in Denver, Colorado, a small hop away from our headquarters in Broomfield! Let’s take a look at the highlights of Percona Live 2023.
Percona Live 2023 Overview
Percona Live, held on May 22 – 24, 2023, provided attendees with invaluable insights into the open-source database world, tackling topics such as scalability, performance and cost optimization, data security, backup strategies, and best practices for managing cloud deployments. Keynotes, breakout sessions, workshops, and panel discussions kept the database conversations going throughout the event.

The three days of the event were packed with interesting open-source database sessions! Here are a few highlights.
MySQL Architectures: Design the Right Solution for Your Needs – Oracle
This tutorial session covered matching MySQL architecture deployment options with the business requirements of an organization’s data. It included working with InnoDB ReplicaSet, InnoDB Cluster, and InnoDB ClusterSet.
What’s New in Open-Source Databases – Amazon Web Services (AWS)
This breakout session explored the key advantages of deploying databases using open-source technologies, and highlighted recent innovations in MySQL and PostgreSQL, along with the open-source and open-source compatible database offerings on AWS.
Lessons Learned Managing Mission Critical MySQL Applications – Microsoft
Microsoft presented the best practices they’ve learned from working with customers of all sizes, covering how to achieve a great price-performance ratio, secure workloads, and ensure reliability and ongoing availability for MySQL applications on Azure.
The sessions were filled with engaging conversations with all the open-source tool developers, meet-up organizers, consultants, entrepreneurs, experts, and renowned speakers.
2023 State of Open-Source Database Survey Findings – Percona
Percona has an annual survey of database professionals working across a variety of company sizes, from SMBs to large enterprises. The preliminary findings for the 2023 State of Open-Source Database Survey were announced at the event – here is a quick summary:
- Only 55% of respondents felt they were doing well with meeting the needs of developers.
- 93% of large enterprises use database monitoring and management solutions.
- 32% of large enterprise database deployments use Database-as-a-Service offerings.
- The top factors leading to respondents choosing open-source databases included cost reductions (83%), faster deployment (75%), and greater control (73%).
- The top factors leading to respondents choosing proprietary databases included greater stability (68%), more security (63%), and regulatory compliance (61%).
- 86% of respondents run both relational and non-relational databases.

Par-TEE Time with MySQL
Let’s not forget about the awesome activities going on after-hours at Percona Live 2023. Datavail and MySQL teamed up at TopGolf for tee time. Our team had a great time connecting with everyone over great food, drinks, and golf, and we always enjoy collaborating with our partner MySQL! Playing real-life Angry Birds at Topgolf was so much fun! Smash structures, defeat pigs, and create mayhem using golf balls.
Overall, Percona Live 2023 offered an invaluable experience for those looking to stay informed about open-source database technologies and best practices – both through attending sessions presented by experts in the field and the collaborative attitude of the community.
