MySQL Summit 2025 Event Recap

Author: Srinivasa Krishna | 5 min read | May 22, 2025

I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at MySQL Summit 2025, and I was excited to see everything that’s in store for MySQL and Heatwave. Plus, it’s MySQL’s 30th year celebration!

MySQL Summit 2025 Key Announcements and Highlights

The event kicked off with keynote sections including a “Welcome Note” from Mughees Minhas, SVP of Products, MySQL, followed by “State of the Dolphin,” by Wim Coekaerts, EVP, Oracle, reflecting 30 years of innovation, growth, and success of MySQL.

Nipun Agarwal, SVP, MySQL and HeatWave, shared insights into the latest advancements and innovations in MySQL and HeatWave

There were lots of great sessions from MySQL Leadership, Product Management, Engineering, MySQL specialists and our awesome community experts. It was such a wonderful gathering at this special event.

You can find the list of sessions and speakers at MySQL Summit 2025.

It’s also not a MySQL Summit without plenty of exciting announcements. Here are my highlights for this year:

  • Hypergraph Optimizers in MySQL9.x  to improve complex join queries,
  • Bringing REST API inside the database allowing for a better developer experience and integration for GenAI application via MySQL HeatWave
  • Announcement of HeatWave Always Free Tier on OCI
  • Expanding on machine learning capabilities inside the database.
  • Improvements to MySQL High Availability included Flow Control monitoring, Stats for Multi-thread applier, and faster failover times
  • Enhancements to MySQL Operator for Kubernetes – Support for MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) for backup, restore, and recovery scenarios
  • Expanding on GenAI support for MySQL, vector indexing, and integrating with REST API
  • MySQL Router enhancements that include new routing algorithms and methods, along with sample reference architectures.
  • Disable double write buffers for write intensive workloads in MySQL in the future, with supported Linux OS enhancements first
  • Improvements to the Bulk data ingestion process for InnoDB and HeatWaveParallel loads/threads from CSV
  • Expanding on Open Telemetry for observability and monitoring, with full stack collection, traces include spans, connectors, and client tools
  • Enhancements to JavaScript inside MySQL Enterprise
  • Enhancements with Heatwave Lekehouse and GenAI

While some of these enhancements are focused on the MySQL Enterprise and Heatwave side to begin with, Oracle is committed to its best efforts to push them to the MySQL Community edition based on experiences gained from the cloud platforms.

Talking About Lessons Learned from Switching from MEM to OEM for MySQL

At MySQL Summit 2025, I had the privilege of sharing insights about transitioning from MySQL Enterprise Monitor (MEM) to Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) for MySQL monitoring following MEM’s end of life earlier this year.

Why Consider the Switch?

MySQL Enterprise customers need reliable alternatives. While many options exist—from open-source solutions like PMM, Grafana, and Zabbix to commercial offerings like IDERA and DataDog—OEM presents a compelling option for organizations already invested in the Oracle ecosystem.

The latest OEM plugin (13.5.3.0.0 as of January 2025) offers comprehensive MySQL monitoring capabilities included with MySQL Enterprise subscriptions, supporting MySQL 5.7 and higher, including RDS deployments.

Benefits of OEM for MySQL Monitoring

  • Centralized monitoring across diverse database environments
  • Proactive management through customizable health dashboards
  • Enhanced incident response with configurable rules and automated notifications
  • Deep performance insights via the Query Analyzer, helping identify optimization opportunities
  • Advanced replication monitoring, including InnoDB Cluster visibility
  • Compliance reporting to simplify security audits and governance

I had a great time connecting with the MySQL Community, and I look forward to what the next 30 years have in store for this database technology!
