What We Learned and Shared at the AWS GenAI for Retail & CPG Conference
Earlier this month, I had the privilege of representing Datavail at the AWS GenAI for Retail & CPG Conference.
Led by Kevin McCurdy, AWS Global Partner Leader for Consumer Goods, this was an incredible gathering of forward-thinking business and IT leaders exploring how Generative AI and Agentic AI are redefining customer engagement, operations, and profitability.
From the moment the sessions began, one thing was clear: we’re entering a new phase of AI adoption. Retailers and CPG organizations are no longer simply experimenting; they’re scaling — with AWS as the engine behind this transformation.
What We Heard
Across presentations and hallway conversations, several themes resonated deeply:
- AI is about productivity as much as creativity. Retailers are leveraging GenAI to write product descriptions and marketing copy at scale, while CPG leaders are applying the same models to improve supply-chain visibility, pricing accuracy, and demand forecasting.
- Agentic AI is the next competitive edge. Businesses want intelligent systems that act — autonomously adjusting inventory, managing pricing, or flagging potential fraud before it hits the books.
- Data readiness drives success. The most powerful models are only as good as the data beneath them. Building trusted, governed, and connected data foundations remains the most important prerequisite for AI success.
“The biggest takeaway from the event wasn’t about models or infrastructure — it was about momentum. Retail and CPG leaders are moving from pilots to production.”
What We Shared
During our session, I highlighted a compelling case study that demonstrated how GenAI and ML, built on AWS, can drive measurable ROI in weeks — not years.
A global consumer packaged goods (CPG) company was losing millions annually to fraudulent invoices and duplicate payments. Manual review processes couldn’t keep pace, and their Accounts Payable (AP) team was drowning in routine data validation tasks.
Working together, we built an AI/ML-powered fraud-detection solution leveraging Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock foundation models. The system analyzed vendor behavior, payment anomalies, and document inconsistencies in real time — achieving:
- 94% detection accuracy
- $2.4 million in annual savings
- 1,500% ROI
Beyond the financial win, automation allowed the AP team to pivot from rote review to strategic investigation and process improvement, creating a smarter, faster, and more engaged finance function.
“When AI takes on the repetitive, humans get to do what they do best — solve complex problems and innovate.”
Where Retail & CPG Go Next with AWS + Datavail
As we continue helping clients modernize their data and AI ecosystems, three opportunity areas consistently emerge:
- AI-Powered Personalization
Use Bedrock and SageMaker to generate real-time, individualized product recommendations, offers, and messages that boost conversion and loyalty. - Intelligent Operations
Apply Agentic AI to autonomously manage tasks such as demand forecasting, supply-chain optimization, and inventory management. - Finance & Compliance Automation
Extend fraud-detection logic to identify pricing discrepancies, contract anomalies, and high-risk vendors across the enterprise.
AWS provides the ideal foundation for this innovation — from SageMaker and Bedrock to Comprehend, Lex, and Lambda — offering scalability, security, and speed to production. At Datavail, our mission is to turn data into decisions and AI into advantage.
Final Thoughts
The excitement at the AWS GenAI Conference was palpable. Retail and CPG organizations have moved beyond asking if they can use AI — now they’re asking where to go next.
With AWS technology and Datavail’s deep expertise in data, analytics, and AI modernization, we’re helping industry leaders unlock efficiency, innovation, and measurable value from GenAI and Agentic AI.
If you couldn’t attend the conference, or if you’re exploring how to accelerate your own GenAI journey, let’s continue the conversation.
