Data Platforms Reaching End of Life in April 2026

MySQL 8.0.x Community Edition and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) MySQL HeatWave 8.0.x

MySQL 8.0.x Community Edition is a landmark version reaching end of life on April 30th, 2026, as the first Long-Term-Support (LTS) major release since Oracle changed MySQL’s software lifecycle to include LTS and Innovation releases.

Oracle will not be releasing any additional updates for this MySQL version. Third-party hyperscaler versions of MySQL 8.0, such as Amazon Aurora MySQL and Azure Database for MySQL, have slightly later end of support dates in May 2026.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s first-party implementation of MySQL HeatWave, however, does not support using MySQL 8.0.x instances beyond the Community edition’s end of support date.

You have a few upgrade paths available from MySQL 8.0.x. If you want to go to the next LTS/Bugfix version, you’ll want to upgrade to MySQL 8.4.x. As of this writing, 8.4.8 is the most recent LTS release. LTS versions have longer release cycles, making them a good choice for mission-critical workloads that need reliability over the latest features.

Oracle also has a MySQL Innovation release track. The software lifecycle on these versions is much faster in order to deliver the latest MySQL features. The drawback is that deprecation happens 5 months after its general availability. As of this writing, MySQL 9.6.0 is the latest innovation release.

IBM Db2 11.1 LUW

IBM Db2 11.1 LUW is reaching the end of its extended support window on April 30th, 2026. This ends any defect patching or additional updates for this version. If you want to stay on IBM Db2 11, you can upgrade to 11.5. You can also upgrade directly from IBM Db2 11.1 to 12.1.

What’s on the Data Platform End of Life Horizon in May 2026

It’s a busy year for data platform end of support dates! Here’s a sneak peek of what’s around the corner in May 2026.

  • Amazon Aurora MySQL 3.08, 3.09
  • Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL 14.13, 14.15, 15.8, 16.4, 16.6
  • Azure Database for MySQL 8.0
  • Amazon RDS for MariaDB 10.5.27, 10.6.19, 10.6.20, 10.6.21, 10.11.9, 10.11.10, 10.11.11, 11.4.3, 11.4.4, 11.4.5

Data platform end of life dates offer a great opportunity to reevaluate what’s working and what’s not in your data strategy. Before you go directly to an upgrade, consider whether it makes sense to migrate on-premises data platforms to the cloud, or to modernize legacy systems to better support advanced workloads such as AI/ML and analytics.

Frequently Asked Questions About Data Platform End-of-Life Management

What does "end of support" mean for a data platform?

End of support means that the vendor will no longer provide defect patching, security updates, or technical assistance for that version of the data platform. This can increase risks related to security, compliance, and reliability.

What are my options if my data platform is reaching end of life?

You can upgrade to a newer version, migrate to a cloud-based service, or modernize your system to support advanced workloads like AI/ML and analytics. Evaluating your needs can help determine the best path forward.

Should I consider migrating to the cloud instead of just upgrading?

Migrating to the cloud can offer benefits such as scalability, improved performance, and reduced maintenance. Review your current data strategy to decide if cloud migration or modernization is a better fit than simply upgrading.

How do I assess the risks of staying on an unsupported data platform version?

To evaluate the risks, consider factors such as potential security vulnerabilities, compliance requirements, and the likelihood of encountering technical issues without vendor support. Conducting a thorough risk assessment can help you make informed decisions about whether to upgrade, migrate, or modernize your data platform.
